Mary Kay Quote of the week: How to greet your employees (or team)

As a independent business owner, I’ve always looked toward the greats like John Maxwell, Oprah and of course, Mary Kay herself!
Today I want to take a look at how Mary Kay said she greats her employees and why (I think) it works. And remember, even if you do not have “employees” you still may have a team or a family that could use a little boost to their day.
Let’s take a look at the quote then we can discuss it a little more.
“I always greet our employees with a warm “Hi! How are you?” When a new employee answers, “Uh, pretty good. How are you Mary Kay?” I’ll say, “you’re not just good, you’re great!” Each time I see him or her afterward, he or she will say, “I’m great!” and the smile will get bigger and bigger. If you act enthusiastic, you become enthusiastic – and is spreads like wildfire!”

Now, I’ll be the first to admit that before 10 am it’s hard for be to be “Great”. My coffee has not had a chance to kick in yet =) BUT, I do understand what Mary Kay is saying. To me, she is saying that YOUR ATTITUDE AFFECTS YOUR WORLD. That means that if you are a downer, then you will bring everyone around you down…. one at a time your team will start put their heads down a little more, get a little more tired and that disease will spread, but if you are a source of motivation then your motivation will be the medicine to help cure the disease of negativity.
Have you every been in a room with someone that was completely positive, happy and full of purpose? If you have, then you will see the entire feeling of the room pick up…. and if you have not, then you may need to 1. Become the light that shines in the room or 2. Get a new group of friends!
Large changes seldom happen overnight, but they never happen if they are never started. This means that it may take some time to change the atmosphere for the better, but once the mood does start getting brighter it will get brighter and brighter and it will be easier to keep bright. If you never take the first step (the first smile and sincere “hello!”) then nothing will change, EVER.
So, look for positive people to add to your team, don’t be afraid to let go of the ones that bring your group down and most importantly, be the brightest light their is!
